This insect is probably familiar to a few people here, but is new to me ... it stood out amongst the other crane flies I was observing courtesy of possessing a brightly marked yellow and black striped abdomen. Which it promptly hid with its wings when it rested. Can't have everything in this life ... Smile

Data for the specimen (UK fauna) as follows:

Location: OS Grid Reference SJ496853
Date: 23/08/2012 10:36 BST
Habitat: Scrub grassland, featuring abundant Bramble & Nettle growth, with an adjacent playing field. Trees in the vicinity include Oak, Rowan, Sycamore (the latter mature).
Conditions: Warm, humid, intermittently sunny.

Photo now follows (if the forum bugs don't get in the way!)

Ooops .. forgot to resample it to keep it within forum limits! Reloading the resampled version ...

Hallo,
This is a Nephrotoma species but I don't think there's enough visible for a species ID. They quite often hang about in the undergrowth with wings spread and allow a good photo.

Thanks! I can try and capture a voucher specimen for Liverpool Museum's Invertebrate Zoology Department, and see if they can pin it down (pardon the pun!) to species level Smile

I will try to fix the messages this month. We have to make some other configuration changes before software goes out of support at end of year.
