This fly was one of several that remained still for the camera recently, and since I'm new to Diptera, I thought I'd let more expert eyes take a look at it. For some reason, my first thought upon seeing this was "possible Asilidae", but having looked at the website John Carr pointed me to with respect to Dolichopodid flies, I'm now wondering if this is a Dolichopodid. Specimen observed and photographed in the UK, OS Grid Reference SJ496853, 13th August 2012, around 09:25. Ambient conditions: weather sunny, warm, humid. Location consists of scrub foliage adjacent to a playing field, principally Bramble, with some Hedge Woundwort present, along with some small Oak trees and several large Sycamores nearby. Photo now follows. EDIT: For some reason the forum won't upload my photo, even though I've given it a space-free filename, and reduced it to 42K in size. Will keep persevering with this.

I was about to upload the even closer shot I took of it, but this is now superfluous to requirements! Many thanks Roger! I'll now look up the details of this beast. Though if it's a Scathophagid, I suspect I'll be looking at something that makes its living in dung ... lovely ... And now, I can see my own photo, for some reason. Methinks some bug fixes are needed.

Apparently this species has been the subject of research into, of all things, sexually transmitted diseases in insects! A relevant paper (though not covering this fly species) is this one: Sexually Transmitted Diseases Of Insects: Distribution, Evolution, Ecology And Host Behaviour by Robert J. Knell & K. Mary Webberley, Biological Reviews of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, 79(3):, 557-581 (August 2004) |
