Zambia Tabanidae Haematopota abyssinica? Date 26.i.11. Size 10mm Miombo Woodland. Location: This belongs to the abyssinica group which are characterised by the elongate abdomen with a pair of subantennal spots. I think this is H. abyssinica s.s. - it is recorded in the literature for Zambia and is widespread in Central Africa. A few individuals taken, one of which at 8.5mm may be a different species. PS these photos were taken of the dried specimen after clearing in solvent as it was greasy. It seems to have brought out the eye band pattern

Here is a photo of the freshly caught specimen clearly showing the long narrow abdomen.
