Photographed close to the shore on rotten seaweed in Bodø, 30.03.12. Could it be confirmed as S. calida or is not possible from photos? Had one identified as probably this species last year (from the same location). Size is close to 10 mm. Geir79 attached the following image: ![]() [141.39Kb] Edited by Geir79 on 31-03-2012 21:13 |

Thanks. Is there any confusion species to this one? I don't know of any keys/descriptions of the species in the genus Scathophaga. |

This works quite well for the Norwegian fauna: Hackman, W., 1956. The Scatophagidae (Dipt.) of Eastern Fennoscandia. Societas Fauna Flora Fennica, Fauna Fennica 2: 1-67, Fig. 1-165, Helsinki. |

Its good to combine with Sifner, F. (2003). The family Scathophagidae (Diptera) of the Czech and Slovak Republics (with notes on selected Palaerctic taxa). Acta Mus. Nat. Pragae, Series B, Nat. Hist.. 59(1-2):1-90. and Ball, G. S. (2007 ver. 3.1) Key to the British Scatophagidae (Diptera) and Šifner, F. (2008). A catalogue of the Scathophagidae (Diptera) of the Palaearctic region, with notes on their taxonomy and faunistics. Acta Mus. Nat. Pragae, Series B, Nat. Hist.. 48(1):111-196. |

Thanks for the suggestions to literature! I have not found anything on Scathophagidae yet on the internet that's available, where could I get this type of literature normally? Would it help to take photos of the terminalia of the flies for identification? This should be possible in field (it's just a little bit difficult). |

Ball's key is available (to members) on the Dipterists Forum website.

Sifner's 2008 catalogue is open for everybody at www.aemnp.eu, I haven't yet been able to find his 2003 key online. |

Thanks again for all the suggestions! I've already been given everything mentioned in this thread by mossnisse by mail ![]() I thougt Scathophagidae was poorly covered by literature, but I guess I was wrong... |
