Taken by Francisco Rodriguez in Almeria, SE Spain, February 2012. I think this is a Eustalomyia sp. Any chance to get the species? Supposedly, only E. histrio and E. hilaris are found in Spain. E. hilaris doesn't match at all, but I am not sure about histrio either. Help, please!!

Muscoidea flies are going to send me to a mad house ![]() I thought I was seeing a clear long anal vein and it had to be Anthomyiidae The closest I could get was Eustalomyia, but not wonder now that nothing seemed to match ![]() Thanks a lot for the ID, Stephen But I don't think I will ever get these right ![]() |

It's really hard sometimes to assess the anal vein in photographs, partly because there are many folds that look like veins. In this case the relevant vein is yellow in colour. On the right wing it does meet the edge, but only because the wing is torn. We can be sure that this one is Muscidae because there are 2+4 dorsocentrals. |

Thanks a lot for your explanation, Stephen! And I see what you mean: the anal vein reaches the edge because the wing is torn. It completely fooled me ![]() Hope it doesn't fool me again next time ![]() |
