Having considered sd's advice that a broad face is distinctive of the Goniini, and being uncertain as to which family this could otherwise belong, I am going to tentatively suggest that this belongs to the aforementioned tribe. Moreover, having considered it in closer comparison to a previously posted individual suggested to be Pseudogonia fasciata, and it appearing the same in all aspects that I can see (white undercoat with black bristles over much of the face, predominantly black abdomen with some white markings, rather rectangular last segment of antennae, slight iridiscence to compound eyes etc), and also having been found on the same property, I would tentatively suggest that this could be the same species? Location: Chongwe, Lusaka, Zambia Size: the size of a large housefly, so perhaps 9mm Habitat: immediate - chlorinated swimming pool. Local - mixture of residential land with ornamental gardens, low-intensity agricultural land, and dry scrub. Date: 19.10.2011 Thanks, Will. Not Goniini. Would be nice to see other angles. The reclinate ocellar bristles narrow down the possibilites. Steve |

The other reason that this one wasn't uploaded earlier... I had assumed, as it was floating on the water, that it couldn't leave until I fished it out. One flash later I discovered I was wrong. I can zoom in on the head, however? |
