Hello! Could this 10 mm Muscid be a Mydaea, or is it again just one of the many Phaonias? Found on Nov-27 on tree trunk (Ostwestfalen/Germany). Thanks for comments! 1. Thank you Robert. I'd wait a little bit more 2. This matter needs more light, may be Robert ask Adrian Pont, may be Tony or Kahis reply. In our Gellery comment under Phaonia rufiventris is: "The thorax is too dark to be pallida and too yellow to be subventa, so I am sure that you are right it naming it as rufiventris" Is there only this vague way to ID? Muscidae are very difficult from photographs .Now I see that no thorax yellow is showing in dorsal view (see second gallery photo of rufiventris for comparison ) I wonder if this is Mydaea spinipes Karl ? though this species is smaller at 7mm.Robert P.S. Keep photographing Muscidae the more photos we see the better the ids will become, especially if we have confirmed id. |

We both posted - 15 minutes apart. The comment on the presutural ac's was mine. The Fonseca key was misleading. Adrian is in South Africa.Witing for Tony We must have a forum on the photos we have so far. More photos of correctly id'd flies would be a great help.
