Hi Simon, welcome to the forum!

I should guess your fly belongs in the family Asilidae.

Clovis, Stephen and Paul
Thank you for the welcome, guidance and identification. I am a complete beginner (as you can tell!)
I have a number of flies and hoverflies for ID coming up shortly, please bear with me if I post in the wrong section!

Cheers

Simon
