Collected at UV light, June 2011, Florida, USA. Size is 3 mm

I had initially thought this may be a Tachytrechus sp., due to the apparent elongated face. But the color pattern doesn't match any of the North American species. So maybe more along the lines of Paraclius or Pelastoneurus?

It went to couplet 22 of Manual of Nearctic Diptera's chapter on the family, which has Tanytrechus as an option. Beyond that are Pelastoneurus, Gymnopternus, Hercostomus, and Paraclius.

If its not Tanytrechus, as best I can tell it keys onwards to Paraclius.

Dear Bradbarnd,

It's an obvious Pelastoneurus (see the bulging face). Another character is the ventral and dorsal pubescence of the arista that should be distinct and longer than the lateral one but this is not so easy to deduce from your pictures.

Dr Scott Brooks (ECORC, Ottawa, Canada) might be able to put a species name of this (unfortunately female) specimen.

Cheers,
Marc

Thanks Marc. I couldn't see the aristal hairs very well myself to judge their lengths. Its good to know that face is another characteristic to look for.
