Hello,

I spent hours trying to key these, in the end it seems to be Tipula (Savtshenkia) holoptera. Is that correct, or have I gone terribly wrong? I can't find any photos to compare. 27th September 2011 on my door at night, near Lincoln UK.

I have photos of both male and female separately from other days which I'm sure are the same species. The female was on one occasion laying her eggs in a semi-shaded place on my meadow grass 'lawn' which is sandy, poor and acidic. I have close up photos of the male genital from the side and back, and the female from the side. I am posting the female side view as well, I can also post the male if required.

I think you should look in the Tipula subgenus.

Thanks for the tip clovis, I think I tried that but couldn't make it work. Wink

I've emailed Pjotr Oosterbroek to see if he can help.

Pjotr is quite sure it's Tipula (Tipula) paludosa, you can see 14 antennal segments although the last one is tiny.
