Being carrion feeders, Calliphora vary in size depending on how much food the larvae have. Males in particular can be very small compared to the largest females of the same species. As for the species, the basicosta appears to be black, so that would exclude vicina. C.vomitoria has rufous hairs on the jowls, but it is not possible to see them in this photo. Have you any other shots? Tony ---------- Tony Irwin |

I had another shot, not of the same individual, but could be useful for the identification keys.

This one is Calliphora vicina - it has a pale basicosta and pale anterior spiracle.

This one is like the first I think, the biggest.

This one is also vicina - pale basicosta and pale anterior spiracle. Still somewhat puzzled by the male in the first photo.
