So, I was right with my idea it was a Chironomid. Are there species alike this one? Is it common? Rare? |

My memory tells me there is nothing like it in Europe. There are two similar species of the genus in America. The original name is Tipula rufipes Linnaeus, 1761 so I assume it is common. American species "mine in freshwater sponges, bryozoans and plants such as Bur-reed, Sparganium americanum (Nuttall)." (Epler, 2001) The only one I ever saw was next to a shallow pond. |
