Taken in the mountains of Madrid on the 18th August 2011. In mixed woodland near flowery meadows. I am not 100% sure it is Tachinid. Some look too close to Sarcophagidae to me Those extremely hairy eyes have me puzzled. Help me, please!

It's definitely a tachinid - I believe hairy eyes are very rare (absent?) in sarcophagids and the thorax is not striped in the same way as in the Sarcophagini ![]() That said, I am not 100% sure what it is ... the parafacial area is very wide so possible something in the Goniini but I'd need a specimen to key through to be able to take it to genus

Thanks a bunch for your reply, Chris! Knowing it is indeed a Tachinid makes me very happy I am hopeless with Sarcophagidae ![]() At least I can try to see the chances with Spanish Goniini, instead of trying to track it down in the wrong family ![]() Best Piluca |

WOW!! Thanks again, Theo!! ![]() I have checked and there are only 3 species in Spain: - pavida - processioneae - pumicata No idea if there is a chance to know the species. But I am pretty happy knowing the genus

Thanks, Theo!! Didn't expect to get the species, it was just in case... ![]() But it is great to know why it is not possible to get it. Very happy with my Pales sp. though! ![]() Chris, I am afraid this isn't the only Pales that got away. Have a look at my new thread I think that one might be a Pales too.http://www.diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=43184 |
