Can anyone confirm my tentative ID for this tephritid? If it is T. longicauda, it was not on it's larval host plant Woolly thistle, Cirsium eriophorum, though plenty of that was growing nearby. 2.7.11 c7mm on Rosebay Willowherb stem, Wiltshire, UK nick upton attached the following image: ![]() [127.24Kb] Nick Upton - naturalist and photographer |

It is a male, which cannot be told T. longicauda from T. serratulae with certainty based on a picture alone. It is rather possible to be longicauda because of the brownish microtrichose wings.

I found i had one decent shot of what I think is a female T. longicauda taken a day later then the male, and about 200m away, and this time on its host plant the Woolly thistle Cirsium eriophorum. Does the long ovipositor make this one T. longicauda rather than serattulae for sure? 3.7.11 c 8mm chalk grassland meadow, Wiltshire, UK nick upton attached the following image: ![]() [91.41Kb] Nick Upton - naturalist and photographer |

Yes, exactly. Plus brownish microtrichose wings, plus bluish tint of the cuticle (in live flies).
