Hello all,

I've only recently joined this group. I'm a nature enthusiast, with a special interest for Flies. I've been recording flies in Mumbai (Bombay) region for several years, and have recorded over 25+ families. Since I don't collect specimens nor have the knowledge of conducting species identification, I've had to limit my studies to family and, if possible, genus level.

On a recent trek in the northern Western Ghats (about 50km from Mumbai), I came across a beautiful Bombyliid (check the link below), and I was wondering if anyone could help me identify it.

Update 25 Sept: Found a mating pair:
lh6.googleusercontent.com/-_Ir6pQWxgO4/Tn9SF4ObjaI/AAAAAAAAEb8/BurOpzWsF0Y/s720/beefly%252520mating.JPG

About the fly:
Photographed near Mumbai
Elevation: 1000+ feet
Size of the fly: A little over a centimeter
Habitat: On grassy slopes
Numbers: Over 10; very common in the above mentioned habitats

I think it is Anthrax sps, but I'm not sure. Any help?

Thanks!
Ani

Welcome to the forum Ani - excellent photograph - I'm sure David Gibbs will be along soon and he might be able to give you a name for your bombylid Smile
