This one is on my site, photographed in 2001. It has been puzzling me for ages. I am pretty sure it is a Limoniidae. An earlier thread pointed me to a possible Symplecta. But searching books and internet did not reveal any species with the almost square, light spot in the wings. Has anybody any idea what this could be? Photographed in the Netherlands April 28th, 2001. Photographed in the garden on the fringe of a small forest (mainly Birches, some American Oaks) on a rather dry and very sandy soil. Your help is highly appreciated, since I am rebuilding my pages on flies, which over the years have accumulated lots of mistakes

This is Limoniidae, but not Chioneinae (as Symplecta is). This is Dicranomyia, subfamily Limoniinae. It may be D. chorea, but this is not an identification! chorea-group sensu lato is very difficult and, partly, in a need of revision. -Jukka Salmela |

 Thank you very much indeed! I will put it on my site as Dicranomyia sp. In the text I will add your words. Knowing the genus is enough for my site and more than I hoped for. Still an interesting genus. Thanks a lot again. |
