frons and face are nearly undusted, spots on tergites are quite round laterally. For me there is no doubt that the specimen belongs to M. mellinum.

Hi Piet,

The frons and ce face are not very dusty but they are. Futhermore the two first antenna articles's are clearly orange and not brown. So for me it's always M. scalare. Wink

I have no problems in calling this one Melanostoma sp. Pierre-Yves but I still think....Grin Perhaps it will find one or two other opinions later. Nevertheless we should invite Mucha Fera to pin his victims in future to solve such questions.

Yes, such specimens (rather photos Wink ) of Melanostoma sp. are really difficult. I think it is M. mellinum - female.

It would have been helpful to also show the face view of the fly you linked to. Pfft

http://www.dipter...to_id=4986

Melanostoma can vary a great deal, you really need to see the face or well defined dust spots from above.

I agree that the fly in question is M. mellinum.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
