Hoovering metalic fly

I found several of those metalic-blue looking diptera (±7 mm) , together hoovering as good as real Syrphidae at ± 1.50m above the ground in Brussels.![]() http://observatio...w/56526683 ID please? thanks Bart |

I thought Lonchaeidae were smaller than that, but I can be wrong. |

This is a Muscidae, Hydrotaea subgenus Ophyra. Can I see the hind legs and the colour of calypters ?

Thanks, They are always on the move, this is the best I could get: ![]() ![]() ![]() The hoovering-behaviour is indeed mentioned by Peter Skidmore in The biology of the Muscidae of the world : «Males of Ophyra are well known for their hovering habits » I 'll try later to get better pictures, Bart |
