I found several of those metalic-blue looking diptera (±7 mm) , together hoovering as good as real Syrphidae at ± 1.50m above the ground in Brussels.

I thought Lonchaeidae were smaller than that, but I can be wrong.

This is a Muscidae, Hydrotaea subgenus Ophyra. Can I see the hind legs and the colour of calypters ?

Thanks,
They are always on the move, this is the best I could get:
observations.be/fotonew/5/2562025.jpg
observations.be/fotonew/6/2562026.jpg
observations.be/fotonew/7/2562027.jpg

The hoovering-behaviour is indeed mentioned by Peter Skidmore in The biology of the Muscidae of the world :
«Males of Ophyra are well known for their hovering habits »

I 'll try later to get better pictures,
Bart
