I photographed this Tipulidae in a meadow in the north-east of Portugal on the 11th of May of this year. I believe it is a female Nephrotoma sp. - could someone please confirm the genus for me? I know it is difficult to identify Tipulidae only from a photograph but if anyone has an idea as to the species that would be great too. Thanks in advance. sarahpogue attached the following image: ![]() [111.46Kb] Edited by sarahpogue on 11-08-2011 10:52 |

Looks like Nephrotoma indeed. For species ID, sideways views of head, thorax and abdomen in close up would come in handy. |

Thanks a million for confirming the genus - unfortunately I didn't manage to get a side view, but I'll know for next time that it's important in determinging the species. Thanks again! |
