I have found this beauty recently. Very rare, only one of a kind, browsing flowers with bunch of hover flies buzzing around. The closest match is Sturmia bella, but I'm not sure... It is huge, twice as large as house fly, with extraordinary huge head.![]() |

No, not Sturmia - more like Spallanzania, I think - do you have more angles? It can't be Sturmia because the head is so very different - like a Gonia, but not quite

I have a few different angles, but very similar to this one, this is the best shot. I didn't picture it from behind, or from above, it escaped. I have checked Spallanzania, but it has yellowish stripes on the body, my fly is grey. The head is very similar. It's still hard to conclude. |

Well, the best I have is this semi-dorsal view. A little bit better view of the wings, I guess. Lateral view was tricky to take, I don't have it. But I will go back to the area this weekend. It must show itself again.![]() |

Yes, to me it looks like Spallanzania but it is a genus that I have never caught myself so I am unfamiliar with it, generally speaking

You are right, Chris, it really looks like Spallanzania. But still a little bit different body colors. I have to find more of them. |
