 In a field near Caversham, UK, on 2011-06-21.
About 15mm long. Each eye has 1 band.
Would I be correct in thinking this Tabanus bromius?

 You are right if upper facets are enlarged and sharply separated from lower ones. I do not see it well on your pictures.

 Unfortunately even the original photos are too blurred to show the eye facets clearly. It was quite windy.
