Hi, Is it possible to get closer than the family in this case? The fly looked cute. I saw it in Bansin, Usedom Island, in August 2008. Many thanks, Sundew Sundew attached the following image: ![]() [152.76Kb] Edited by Sundew on 30-05-2011 18:49 |

What a surprise! To me, the character set striped thorax + chequered abdomen + bright red eyes (+ feathery arista) led straight to Sarcophagidae, I did not even think of a Muscid. And I am familiar with Musca autumnalis - males... So we have quite a sexual dimorphism! I checked my photo collection and found a mating couple. What is seen of the female fits well indeed! And brown abdominal spots like in males are also lacking in, e. g., Graphomya, so I'll keep in mind: round head = Muscid (till my next error!). Thanks for leading me the right way, Sundew Sundew attached the following image: ![]() [141.2Kb] |

Muscidae often have four black stripes on the thorax, rarely if ever three. Sarcophaginae typically have three, rarely if ever four. |
