19-05-11, Powys, mid-Wales Following on from Janets Anthomyia photos and Michaels ID I have these photos which I have under male Anthomyia procellaris/imbrida/bazini I noticed that in Janets photos the eyes of the male A. procellaris are touching and the frons is very small, in my phtotos there is a gap between the eyes Can I discount procellaris from the above list? oceanlis2000 attached the following image: ![]() [63.3Kb] Dr Elisabeth A. Hi Elizabeth, Wait for Michael's next visit, but in the meantime: Michael's key doesn't use this feature to separate these 3 species. For the whole group (but not A. pluvialis) he says 'Parafrontals generally contiguous on frons', so I guess there could be some variation in the width of the white parafrontals. Judging from the number of ad setae on the hind tibia (image 1), I think A. imbrida is unlikely, so I guess procellaris is still favourite. But you are in Wales... |

The ad-setae on the hind tibia being numerous suggests that it is imbrida male. I can count about 10. But a photo of the 5th sternite laterally would be the only way to make a positive identification. |

Ah, I was counting all but about 5 of the ad as av, judging from the different lengths in different viewing angles - illustrates the hazards of trying to interpret photos! |
