Hi, This medium-sized black fly I saw in a Berlin wood a week ago. It was too shy to allow for more and better photos. The peculiar wing venation made me think of Rhinophoridae, but I am very uncertain. Please help me with the family and perhaps a genus. Many thanks, Sundew Sundew attached the following image: ![]() [152.54Kb] Edited by Sundew on 21-05-2011 23:06 |

Looks more like Syrphidae to me

You are absolutely right, Chris! How could I overlook the vena spuria... So it is something around Pipiza and thus hopeless. Thanks for putting me on the right way! |

What a surprise, dear Andre! That genus puzzles me. I have lots of photographs of Cheilosias (several species), and none of them shows this triangular wing position. All of them carry their wings parallel, one covering the other. So I thought I knew what Cheilosias look like... The fly shown above had a very different appearance. However, I won't doubt your ID - many thanks! |
