Hello, yesterday I caught a Lonchaeid in Yerseke, the Netherlands. It was about 3,5 mm. I hope someone can give me ID (maybe genus) with help of the following pictures: http://waarneming...w/53873428 Thanks.

hairy eyes, broad genae, all black legs and looks like hairs on scutellum anterior to the bristles make this a Chaetolonchaea - probably C. pallipennis more info on the genus at http://lonchaeidae.myspecies.info/chaetolonchaea Iain Iain MacGowan |

That would be a first for the Netherlands...

Looks like Iain was right, but in the absence of reference material (and the fact that I seemed to have mislaid my keys I put it at 99% certain for the moment. Rather awkward in the Handbook to the British Lonchaeidae is that in the key where the feature of the smaller scutellar setae in front of the anterior large seta is illustrated, the illustration shows small setae on the dorsal surface as well. These are not present in Chaetolonchaea but might easily put you on the wrong foot... Paul - - - - Paul Beuk on https://diptera.info |

Okay, found the book. Following Morge's key it should indeed be pallipennis because the prescutellar area has only a few small setae rather than 10-12.

Paul Glad to hear my guess was correct! To be fair to the British Handbook Chaetolonchaea is not a genus we have on this offshore group of islands so it was not looked at in too much detail! Iain MacGowan |
