Hello Forum,

this hairy fly was basking at the edge of a forest track. Is it possible to identify the specie?

Location: Germany (South-east Lower Saxony; mainly deciduous forest; April 2011)

Thank you very much for attention!

Looks like Tachina lurida but the photo is a bit dark so I am not 100% sure whether it has thin pale bands (T.ursina).

EDIT: I have tried some work in PhotoShop but the image has lost so much detail that it is still inconclusive - but I would still go with T.lurida.

Hello Chris,

thank you very much for your help! Sorry for that somewhat dark picture. Should be the thin pale bands on the abdomen? Then I wouldn't see any and would agree with your suggestion.

Best regards
Stefan

To me, it is 'clearly' ursina:
it is a male (given width of vertex), and in male lurida the thrid antennal segment is strongly broadened.
This is lacking here.
Moreover, period of year fits ursina (much) better.

Oh, and the presence of dust band on T5 clearly cannot be judged from this angle, since I don't see any as well on tergites 3-4, where they are present in all species mentioned.
