At first I thought it a bumblebee... then I thought it a robber fly...
is it a bee fly? I don't think so. Hmmm... Paul?

For a change: it is a syrphid: genus Mallota. Nine Nearctic species.

Tried to attach an image to a forum post. jpg, 32kB, 72dpi, no blanks, ... File name is correctly displayed, but when I click "Preview Thread" it just vanishes. Help!
