Clitheroe UK 16 March 2011 Now I have three specimens in alcohol from the site where I found the Pericoma larva at http://www.dipter...d_id=35089, including the one in the photo. Looks as if I have both sexes. What should I do next? Stephen R attached the following image: ![]() [108.06Kb] Edited by Stephen R on 29-03-2011 13:18 |

Hi, You should lay a dead specimen on a flat surface and using two pins cut off the last part of the abdomen. Than put it in NaOH or KOH (cleaning sprays for kitchen often contain it, they can be used) and leave the part in it until it gets clear. Than take a microscope glass and put the part in glycerol, put something near it to bear the weight of the coverslip (e.g. parts from glass wool). Than cover it with a coversil and make photos of the gentialia from side and from over and under. But Pericoma is quite hard to determine even with genitalia-photos, if I remember correctly. Good luck! Walter Walter Pfliegler - Amateur Nature Photographer from Hungary (and molecular biologist) |

Thanks Walter. I only have a binocular microscope, and I don't think I'm going to be able to get clear enough photos just with my camera lenses. Perhaps I'll wait till I'm better-equipped! Stephen. |
