mysql server has gone away

Several times over the past week part of a page has been replaced with the error message "mysql server has gone away" repeated about three times. Reloading the page usually works.

It happens when the load on the server is rather high. Usually it goes away on its own, otherwise I restart the mysql server and then we are cool again.
