Hi !

Does anyone here know what Diogma caudata looks like? Or read Russian?

I can easily distinguish D. caudata and D. glabrata males with the figures in Paramonov's 2006 key. But I wonder if caudata also has the black spot under the eye that glabrata has. Maybe Paramonov says so, but I can't decipher the Russian text. I attach the Dioma part of his key here.

My Russian is very poor - but there is no mention of a black spot.

8th Sternite Smooth & 10th tergite covered with long hairs - female caudata

8th Sternite Wrinkled - female glabrata

I am sure our Russian Friends can do better

Hi Mark!

Many thanks! Than I assume the eye dot is not a character that distinguishes the species.

Perhaps someone comes along who know both species from closeby...

Hi,
I hope I can be of service.
In the identification guide it is written as follows (the text below concerns female only): D.caudata – VIII sternit smooth. At the base of cercus lateral projection of X tergite is well represented, covered with long hairs (fig. 641, 11). D.glabrata – VIII sternit wrinkled (crossed with transversal furrows). Lateral projection of X tergit is not represented (fig. 614, 12).
I believe that presence or absence of lateral projection of tergite X is a good distinctive feature.
I have also checked the specimens of D.caudata kept in the collection. The form and location of black spots under eyes varies significantly, and as you supposed it cannot be used as the distinctive feature.
