Hello, Is this a Tipula species? 19th October on my wall, near Lincoln UK. I think it was around 20mm long with wings, and I think it's a female. 4 pics Janet

Something like Tipula marmorata is likely (but not certain!).

Yes I thought that too Jason, I have seen one identified as that on WAB by Laurence. As these can be so darned similar I wanted to make sure.

Next time you see one, check the sex - a photo of the side of the genitalia (of either sex) should offer more to go on (length of T10, keel on lower cerci, degree of dusting for girls) with other species.

This is very probably Tipula confusa. Very common in October. |
