Hello,

8th October, over water, my garden (near the Ivy!) near Lincoln UK.

Male was around 7mm. I have found a very old photo of Cricotopus sylvestris on bioimages which looks like the female. I usually see a red lettering warning on this site if the photo is not a confirmed specimen.

http://www.bioima...p54652.php

But, on bugguide the US site, there is one with the same name which has just a spot rather than a band on T4

http://bugguide.n...iew/245295

The identifier of that one is someone who has been studying aquatic insects for over 35 years!

So, any comments? Wink

2 pics.. I can crop closer if needed.

Hmm, I have cropped the genital area for a closer view but that I doubt will be sufficient?

How certain would you be of this? It is not listed as being present in the UK, but anything is possible!

The nearest records are only just across the Channel..

Here is a list of the Cricotopus species listed for the UK..

http://www.dipter...hp?id=6374

Could any of those be similar to this one?

Thank you for your input anyway.

The Fauna Europea map shows records in Netherlands and Poland, Germany is between the two and you are to the east, I am to the west! Records are often not indicative of the true distribution, it would seem unreasonable to expect this species is confined to within borders of some countries!

Oh well, no specimen gives no species name but I have the genus.

p.s. I searched for 'wolsella' as I am not familiar with the word, I found it was in a pdf link from a Polish site but babelfish translator does not do Polish language. Wink
