Is this not possible? I have looked at the list of Suillia we have here, and by searching on this site I found one thread which mentions S. dumicola. As that fly was large, not quite as large as mine but males are often smaller, and the mention of the costal spines suggests to me this could be S. dumicola. Definitely not dumicola! I have it on good authority that if this has hairs under the scutellum then it's most likely Suillia imberbis. Luckily, I got more shots of the same fly on the 8th! It definitely was around 10mm. I have a side view which is not so well focused, lucky that I kept the pic as it does appear to show hairs under the scutellum! Hairs on the underside of the scutellum are indeed very important in determination of Suillia's. I think I looked at least 1,5 minuten to the last picture. I am unable to say whether I see the typical hairs on the underside or the end of bristles on the other lateral side of the fly. For me the photo is not clear enough. From experience I know that even under microscope you have to look very carefully for not "missing" the sometimes very tiny hairs. ruud van der weele rvanderweele@gmail.com |

Well, it can't be flavifrons because of the size. The best fit then is Suillia imberbis, unless anyone else can say there is another this size which could also fit. Ruud, I blew the pic up more than 100% and to me it looks like there are a couple of small black hairs which do come from the middle of the underside of the scutellum, not bristles from the other side but until I blew the pic up I did wonder about that too. I can't be sure about that though! It would be very difficult to get a good shot of that area even if I tried!
