Hey,

is anyone able to determine this 14mm long fly, picture taken in the garden on ivy, 29th September 2010, between the Black Forest (north) and the Upper Rhine / Murg Valley / Southwestern Germany, 165 meters above sea level.

Regards Ulrich

It's a Nowickia but I'm not sure which species it might be Smile

I think with Nowickia we'd need to see the abdomen pattern better and also see the colour of the palps Smile

Well, it will have to wait for Theo (doesn't look like ferox) ... or if you don't mind sending me the specimen then I can key it out properly Grin

It does look like ferox, the tip of the palpus is yellow, that suffice. Moreover, the abdominal pattern suggests ferox, this is however variable, so that is why I did not react on the first pic.

Nevertheless, always good to check the genitalia (very distinctive in Nowickia)
