The abdomen is orange apart from a broad black mark down the middle, the wings are obscuring most of it. It's a pretty distinctive fly with nothing else that looks like it here.

Hi Janet You are of course correct with the ID ... but there are 3 other Tachina spp. in the UK (grossa, ursina & lurida) - none of which look like this ![]() Also if you ever get a Tachina in the UK with dark front tarsi then you might have the first T.magnicornis for the UK. Also, we can never discount Peleteria rubescens, which has been recorded twice in the UK - but can be eliminated in this case by the lack of Peleteria-bristles between the lower eye edge and the mouth
