This male was round 9 mm. Is it possible to give it a name?

Rhamphomyia sp. Likely candidates are all well under 9 mm so are you certain about the size? Have any other pictures or perhaps even the specimen?

Thanks for looking at my flies Theo.
It is sitting on Tanacetum vulgare. Size of flowerhead normally 9-12 mm so perhaps 7-8 mm instead.
This was only picture I manage to get.

Paul, is this not an handsome R. spinipes? On the third femur, I think I see those typical collection of black bristles. Maybe I am silly. The size is okay, also the period.
I should say I never collected this species myself

I think you may be right. I compared some of the features with Barták's description of spinipes: mesonotum with two darker stripes on dc (there appears to be a darker stripe on ac here as well); f3 bare ventrally, with a cluster of long pv bristles in apical third (f3 does not seem to be bare here). I guess Barták's description should be interpreted differently as I now compared it with Collin's description (I did not realise it was a British species, too) and that one does indeed fit better. Still, AFAIK, spinipes should not be this pale grey but perhaps that is the flash playing tricks.
