My first post in this forum. I became interested in flies through photography. I like to make macro-photo's and so I meet all sorts of insects (generally in my backyard). Most of them I can identify, but diptera is giving me some trouble. This one I can't find in my books or elsewhere. I met him/her a view days ago in my backyard. I live in a village in the Dutch countryside. There is some open water nearby. I think it's one of the Stratiomyidae. Am I right? A bigger photo can be found here. Welcome to the Forum Jan - great photo. It does look like a start to my untrained eyes but I'm sure someone will be along to give a better ID than me

Yezzzz, that looks very much like it ![]() I even think, looking at the photo's, that it's the Loxocera sylvatica. Great, thanks for your answer, Phil! Jan. |

not Loxocera sylvatica as sylvatica has a yellow/brown humeri. scutellum is not yellow, so not l. nigrifrons. One can't really see the head details to separate the other species. My gut feeling is for L. albiseta. Nice picture though |
