I don't really think it is but after 2 hours with Stephen R's suggestion of 'A key to the families of British Diptera' by D M Unwin and realising (quite early on) that I didn't have the vocabulary or conclusive photos of all parts required for ID, I guessed!! A second to follow shortly.

Ok, thanks Theo - as a new comer to this, it's not easy to know what info separates the species, I now appreciate more that each different angle and view of the insect can give further clues (and consequently have failed early on in that respect as I have binned nearly all the 'out of focus' shots which may well have carried important info!) Well, you have to start somewhere and so for me - the bottom it is!. Thanks again |
