Hello!

Some of these flies were flying around at a beech forest path (northwest Germany) three days ago, always returning to same places on leaves. There were two "size classes" (females and males?): some as big as Tachina fera (~12-14 mm), some clearly smaller (7-9 mm). There were also many of the even smaller Phorocera around there.

Is this Ernestia sp.? Probably E. puparum (seems a little bit late)?

I had the same fly last week - it was Ernestia. In my case they were E rudis (I took a specimen to check identity), but it probably will not be possible to say which species yours is.

Thanks, Nigel! I find E. rudis relatively often in spring here, but I can't remember that they had such red markings. So I thought, these must have been a different species.
Best regards,
Jürgen
