In my key (Fonseca, 1968) it says that the orbital seta are never crossed for Lispocephala but here they are so is the key wrong or can it vary, an important point for determining the genus Thank you

Hi Elisabeth, I am sure all will be clearer after this : The Coenosiinae never have crossed interfrontal bristles. It is not question of orbital bristles or even of frontal bristles. This Lispocephala has 2 reclinate orbital (the upper ones) and 2 frontal (the lower ones) bristles. These frontals are indeed convergent, but they are not what is called the interfrontal pair of setae. The interfrontal pair of setae is in the middle of the frons (the frontalia), between the frontal rows as illustrated in this picture : http://www.dipter...post_28591 Stephane. |
