Apologies if this is in the wrong section but I am new to understand the different classifications of insects. I photographed this fly but have so far not been able to identify from any of the books that I have. It was photographed on the Llyn Peninsular, North Wales, UK. Could anyone help me?

Many thanks
Kerry

Thanks Stephane. Are these flies quite variable in colour then? The other images I have found on this site show them in bottle green. How do you tell it is a female?

Thanks for your help.

The frons (part between the eyes) is broad. In this group it indicates it is a female.
There is also intraspecific variation in colour, and the way the colour is seen can depend on orientation and lighting.
