Hi, This small dark fly was inspecting the bark of an old poplar recently. I have no idea what it is. Unfortunately it was too shy to take pics from all sides. Is there any chance to find a name? Many thanks, Sundew Sundew attached the following image: ![]() [177.96Kb] Edited by Sundew on 04-05-2010 13:49 |

So you guess Calliphoridae - I did, too, but I do not know any with brownish wings. And the Pollenias I know are bigger... Besides, I thought that there was a very short petiolus, which made me think of Rhinophoridae. However, the habit is different. May be I see it again and can take a lateral shot. |

I also see some fur between the bristles at the sides of the thorax. But the petiole is disconcerting. |

Pollenia amentaria / atramentaria subgroup One of those (i think atramentaria) has a petiole, so no problem !! Theo |

So it is a Pollenia indeed, even though there is no golden hair between the bristles of the thorax back! There is fur on the sides indeed, but the typical Pollenia curls are lacking... Shall it go to the gallery as P. cf. atramentaria, or is it too untypical?

Well, these hairs are very typical indeed for Pollenia amentaria group. Is this specimen from the surroudings of Berlin ? Theo |

Not surroundings - Berlin itself . I live in a quite green district with foxes, martens, and hedgehogs passing by and a tremendous nightingale singing contest every night (and even day). |
