I am sure I've seen this one on here before but I can't find it...It was found this evening at Scatsta Airport sitting on bags of Salt/Grit. Size was 3-4mm.

EDIT; Added Family and Genus to heading.

Thanks Andrzej and Tony
I thought it looked a bit like an Ephydrid with a froglike face...
I have one entry for Parydra in my List for Shetland;
Parydra pusilla Mg./nigritarsus Strobl
Whatever it is, it's the first time I've seen it up here Wink, nice to find a new fly.

Regards Roger

EDIT; Another photo just to use it up

Hi Roger - it's not pusilla or nigritarsis. There doesn't appear to be a large bristle on the outer surface of the mid coxa, and there looks to be a small appendix on R2+3, so I suspect this is corarctata (female).

Cheers Tony
It would be great to get this little fly to species. Here is a dorsal view which I have done a repair job to in Photoshop....exposure was all over the place, but it has come out OK Smile.
Hope this helps in confirming your suspicions.

Yes, looks like coarctata OK - if you can just check the mid-coxa - coarctata lacks the strong bristle which is present in the other species.

Thanks Tony
I have just zoomed in on all 48 Photo's I took of this fly....Frown, what a crap way to spend a Sunday Night..Grin...Anyway, I can't find a bristle, other than these few hairs hanging down on the mid-coxa. Don't know if this is what you are looking for.

No, they're not big enough. I'd put it down as coarctata.
