Hi,

this Tachinidae was in my indet Muscidae unit. Captured July 4. 2009 Loviisa, Finland. It looks a lot like Medina separata but can it be ? I can take more pictures if needed.

Yes,it is a male Medina and it looks a lot like separata

Why the doubt ? Is it so rare in Finland ?

In fact I don't know if it's rare or not Frown. We have 19 in our database and the last one is from 2007. I only have one before from 2006. Do You need more detailed pictures ?

No thanks.

It is either separata or melania and those are very similar in the male sexe. I have never seen melania myself, it is rare in Central and Northern Europe, whereas separata is relatively common parasitoid of ladybugs.

So I have little doubt on separata

Not rare, but never numerous. To my impression, they prefer a bit cooler habitats. Tachinids are not collected that much, so explains the lack from 2008, and I believe that most of the records from 2009 are not yet in the database.
