Hello!

This pale 0.8-1 mm midge was running fast on a tree trunk in our garden (northwest Germany) three nights ago. I'm not sure about the family. Are there brachypterous Sciaridae?

It is quite pale, so could be teneral, freshly emerged, hence the small wings. Nice find. It is a male.

Hi!

That was my first idea, too. But the wings look rather finished with their venation and shape, not scrubby or still not unfolded. Also it was running around very fast. In my experience teneral individuals tend to be less active, merely waiting for their wings to unfold.
Best regards,
Jürgen
