Hello flyforum,

This flies I could find on leaf of waterlily.
A few mm (~3) and not easy to shoot. (boat moving - wind - waterwaves - plant moving)

Perhabs someone knows what kind of flies these are?

greeting, Robert

Steve's right. Both flies are Notiphila, but there are two species. Notiphila is a difficult genus, and usually I would only identify from specimens, not photos. The top photo may be possible, with the silvery white face. I'll try later.

thank you Steve and Tony,

I have seen 12 kinds of Notiphila in the Dutch sp. list?
You mentioned about two species.., do you mean two sp. which are close related to each? (the other sp. look more different?)
I'll place a picture from upperview.

greeting robert

making pictures outside a boat is not easy!
beside the boat there was wind and the object was moving..
it is a wonder that there is something to see..

Hi Robert
I meant that the top two pictures are of two different species. There are indeed many more in the Netherlands. I would guess that the top photo is of Notiphila brunipes, but that is based on the habits of this species in Britain, where it is regularly found sitting on waterlilies (more so than any other species).
I think your photos are great, considering that they were taken from a boat!Grin Please don't drop your camera overboard - we're looking forward to seeing more of your pictures!Wink
