4mm, last week on a dead log on woodland floor, Meresands Wood Reserve in Lancashire. It reminded me of Geomyza, but no obvious wing shading. Have I got the right family? Second thoughts: now I have noticed the legs, with the short tibia, it doesn't look so much like Geomyza after all, so perhaps I'm way out ![]() Stephen R attached the following image: ![]() [123.33Kb] Edited by Stephen R on 15-09-2009 19:40 |

Ah, thanks Andrzej - I was just editing my doubts in while you were replying. I haven't met Piophilidae before, so I'll go and do some homework! Stephen. |

I think my thoughts about the legs may have come from misinterpreting the photo. This view seems to give a different impression. How variable is leg colour in Allopiophila luteata? It seems the closest candidate in the Gallery, and one of relatively few piophilids accepted as British in Fauna Eur. I get the impression that 4mm is quite big for Piophilidae. Is that right? Yes, I'll wait! In the meantime, I found this photo from May in my unidentified bin. It was on a limestone wall in Yorkshire (also northern England). I think it may be the same thing?
