From Jura (France), 24 July.

It's Empis I guess. But what really baffles me is the orange 'thing' attached to the fly!

Probably an egg?! But of what? This egg is HUGE compared to its host. The resulting parasite cannot be very big, so maybe mom wasn't so smart??

Tachindae?

Any info welcome!

That's a mite? Do they lay such huge eggs relative to their prey?

Hi,
This is Empis (Xanthempis) lutea Mg. with a parasite mite (red mite), no eggs in this case.

Best regards,

Igor Shamshev

Hi! these kind of mites, some Prostigmata families, incl. Erythraeidae, which is most likely here, begin their lifes as eggs, than they are in larval stadium, than they are called nymphs (also different nymph stadiums are known) and than they become adults. This is a larva.
