UK fly ID please

Hi - my first post in here Smile

Would someone be able to ID this little fly that was in my garden please?

Also, if it can be ID'd would you also tell me if it bites humans (sounds like a silly question, but I do like to know if something in my garden might give me a nasty bite lol).

Hi! Chrysopilus female, Rhagionidae, a snipe fly, completely harmless, eats other insects.

Chrysopilus asiliformis going by the greyish colour and yellowish legs.

Thanks for that too Tim, much appreciated. I will keep checking back to see if others concur with your ID, as it would be nice to name it correctly in my photo gallery Smile

Hi - oh yes sorry, I should perhaps have put the gallery link in a signature or something - I didnt get a chance earlier when I registered.

Can you tell me where you saw the Gymnosoma here? Smile Was it in England?

Hi - yes, definitely in the UK and I am 99% certain that these were taken in my garden. I normally put in the photo details where I have taken the photo but I notice I didnt on these, although the majority of my photos of insects are from my garden. I have loads of these little daisy-type flowers in the garden and from memory, I believe these flies were in the front garden.

Very nice - could you PM me the details, such as location, grid reference, date etc? I am pretty sure you are in the known range of G.rotundatum but it would be a nice record and it's worth checking out Smile
