Hi - my first post in here Smile

Would someone be able to ID this little fly that was in my garden please?

Also, if it can be ID'd would you also tell me if it bites humans (sounds like a silly question, but I do like to know if something in my garden might give me a nasty bite lol).

Many thanks

Hi! Chrysopilus female, Rhagionidae, a snipe fly, completely harmless, eats other insects.

Thanks for that too Tim, much appreciated. I will keep checking back to see if others concur with your ID, as it would be nice to name it correctly in my photo gallery Smile

(At least I know its harmless now lol)

Thanks again.

Hi - oh yes sorry, I should perhaps have put the gallery link in a signature or something - I didnt get a chance earlier when I registered.

Anyway, here is the link to the Insects part of my galleries:
http://www.pbase....ll/insects

and here is the link to the sub-gallery for flies
http://www.pbase....kell/flies

If by any chance you do take a look and see anything that I have incorrectly ID'd, please do let me know - thanks Smile

Hi - yes, definitely in the UK and I am 99% certain that these were taken in my garden. I normally put in the photo details where I have taken the photo but I notice I didnt on these, although the majority of my photos of insects are from my garden. I have loads of these little daisy-type flowers in the garden and from memory, I believe these flies were in the front garden.

Very nice - could you PM me the details, such as location, grid reference, date etc? I am pretty sure you are in the known range of G.rotundatum but it would be a nice record and it's worth checking out Smile
