I just want to check that this is Oxycera rara, shouldn't it have yellow patches behind the eyes, or is that just the female?

10/7/2009; Devon, England

Thanks

I'd say Oxycera dives male....
it would be my first idea... but the legs are not entirely black... (or even almost). But the occiput has no yellow... maybe really an O. rara male...
Also the wings are not dusky as it happens for O. dives. Curious one this specimen!
Yes, Oxycera rara male... also the yellow markings has no round tips as it happens for O. dives. And pleuron is yellowish for O-. rara - here we just see a glimpse of it. Smile It would need a lateral view. But this is enough... so very probably to be a male O. rara. I would expect more yellow in the occiput.

I agree with male rara.

The yellow eye pathes are only there in female sexe.

Thanks Jorge and Theo, sadly no side view was possible. It keyed out as rara, but I was confused by photo of 'male' in Stubbs & Drake showing clear yellow patches on occiput.

there is no need for lateral view. This photo is enough as I told. Smile Nice photo! Wink

The colouration of the antenna and the shape of the yellow spots suffice to conclude to rara, according to the dutch key by Brugge.

I agree on the error in Stubbs, fig 13a must be female.
Look at the abdominal tip.
